The Caldera was an empty space that was at the heart of the Great Houses' Homeworld.
It was created when the Yssgaroth entered into the Universe with the Caldera serving as the centre of history. Anything that occurred at this location had the potential of rewriting all of history from the beginning. (PROSE: The Book of the War)
